In order to comply with regulations you must meet these three requirements: 

First , you must identify all hazardous waste that you generate. Secondly, you must not store more than 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs) of hazardous waste or 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of acute hazardous waste
on site at any time. Finally, you must ensure delivery of your hazardous waste to an off-site treatment or disposal facility using an approved waste handler. 

Small and Large Quantity Generators

Small Quantity Generators (SQGs) are hazardous waste generators that produce between 100 and 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste per month.They are subject to several requirements from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including: 

  • Record keeping: SQGs must keep records of waste analyses, tests, and determinations for at least three years. They must also document arrangements with local fire departments and other emergency response organizations. 

  • Training: SQGs must ensure that personnel receive basic training on hazardous waste management and emergency procedures. 

  • Re-notification: SQGs must re-notify the EPA every four years using EPA Form 8700-12. 

  • Container management: SQGs must manage hazardous waste in tanks or containers that meet technical standard

  • Accumulation: SQGs can store hazardous waste on-site for up to 180 days without a permit. If the waste is being transported more than 200 miles, the storage period is extended to 270 days. The total amount of hazardous waste stored on-site cannot exceed 6,000 kilograms. 

  • Identification: SQGs must obtain an EPA Identification (EPA ID) number. 

  • Manifestation: SQGs must use a manifest when sending waste off-site for recycling or disposal. They must keep a copy of each signed manifest for at least three years.

This is not an exhaustive list; only a brief description. Contact State and Local Government for specific laws and regulations pertaining to storage, transport and disposal requirements or email us if you have questions. 

  • Vapes should never be stored for more than one year.

  • All accumulation dates must be documented and accurate, including correct placarding and labeling of containers. 

  • Damaged, defective, and recalled products must be handled under DOT special permit and additional regulations.

  • Container specific shipping and transportation weight limits apply. USPS prohibits the transport of e-cigarettes!!

  •  All materials must be properly disposed of at an HHW facility or with an approved waste handler. (Other restrictions apply.)
